So, you’re after stuff to do in Wales? Whether you’re in the area on staycation or your Welsh born and bred and you’re just looking for something a bit different – we've got you covered. Wales is great whatever the plan is – a family day out, a break from the daily hustle, an adventure – you’re never short of something to do (no matter the weather).
There’s bustling cities like Cardiff, beautiful coastlines that’ll have you feeling much further away and tonnes of outdoor space (including some stunning national parks). We could all use an extra dose of fresh air, right? So, be prepared to fall in love with this corner of the UK. Here’s what you should get up to.
Wales has tonnes of good old heritage to immerse yourself in. If you’re into that, Caerphilly Castle is a good place to start – it's just north of Cardiff and dates back to 1268. Kids will love getting lost in the maze and taking a trip into the Dragon’s Den (no pitching your latest invention, though). It’s pretty educational too so prime for a sneaky bit of out-of-school-schooling.
It’s not the only option when it comes to castles, Cardiff Castle boasts more than 2,000 years of history, while Conwy Castle is our North Wales historical spot of choice (the backdrop of Snowdonia cinched it for us).
Looking to escape into the outdoors? There are few places better to explore than North Wales, trust us. Coed y Brenin Forest Park is a hotbed of woodland trails for explorers of all levels to enjoy on bike or foot. Try your hand at orienteering or geo-caching here too and keep your eyes peeled for the Animal Puzzle trail. It’s hungry work, so a picnic is essential packing as far as we’re concerned.
Further south in mid-Wales, Lake Vrynwy is a prime relaxing spot. With spectacular waterfalls, a Sculpture Park, more wildlife than David Attenborough could shake a stick at, and even spas for a real treat - it’s the ultimate outdoorsy paradise. Ahhh bliss.
How does a hike up Mount Snowdon sound? If you’re already tired just thinking about it (we don’t blame you), cheat by taking the Snowdon Moutain Railway and enjoy the views from the comfort of your seat. Or, if that’s not your bag, Pembrokeshire Coast National Park in southwest Wales has loads to offer. We’re talking coasteering, kayaking and surfing. Warning: it’s probably chilly.
Zip World is a solid choice too, with three locations across North Wales. Try your hand at tree-top challenges in Betwy-y-Coed, navigate through slate mines in Balenau Ffestiniog, or ride the world’s fastest zip line and tour the Penrhyn Quarry in Bethesda. Only if you’re brave enough though.
Luckily, there’s a fair amount of indoor attractions to choose from too because, as we know, the weather can be unpredictable (at best). LC Waterpark in Swansea is great for getting wet indoors rather than outdoors, with slides, wave pools and play areas to keep kids entertained for hours. At the other end of the country, Llandudno’s Chocolate Experience is a no-brainer for anyone with a sweet tooth.
