It’s no secret that the UK isn’t exactly blessed with the best weather (and by that we mean even in summer it seems to rain 50% of the time), but we’re not bitter about it, honestly.
Despite this, you should still be able to go on days out- fun ones too. That’s why we’ve collected some of the best places to go when the weather ain’t on your side, you’re welcome.
If instead of basking in the sunshine, you’d like to learn about the gruesome history of York whilst meeting some (creepily) realistic actors - York Dungeon could be the place for you. You’ll meet some of the city’s most notorious characters, including Guy Fawkes (he’s a banger of a bloke- ha, get it?), highwayman Dick Turpin, and Saint Margaret Clitherow- safe to say she met a sticky end.
This 75-minute tour will have you laughing and probably a little spooked by the end, what else would you want on a rainy day?
Everyone knows that finding a reasonably priced day out in the capital is a task and a half. And that makes the Science Museum all the more appealing as it’s FREE to enter. Not only this, but it’s the perfect place for young intellects to cure their knowledgeable cravings.
There are tonnes of hands-on and interactive experiences which will – quite literally – make their hair stand on end (you may need some Frizz Ease).
Did you dream of going to Willy Wonka’s factory as a young kid? Well, you can basically do the same thing at Cadbury’s World (but without anyone drowning in chocolate or being attacked by squirrels, phew). Watch chocolatiers work their magic, learn Cadbury’s trade secrets and get hands-on in the ‘Have a Go’ zone... But the best part has to be the taste tests, you can fight us on that one. Oh, and it's just outside of Birmingham too, winner.
You can join in on the 4D Chocolate Adventure and the gentle ‘Cadabra’ ride that little ones will love – but it’s fun for adults too, duh.
Ayyyeee ayyeeeeeee, Captain! Immerse yourself into the world of Action Stations, a high-tech, hands-on indoor attraction in the heart of Portsmouth’s historic dockyards. You get the real naval experience as your skills are tested through physical challenges, simulators and experiences- including the UK’s tallest indoor climbing tower.
Oh, and there’s a Royal Marines-inspired Laser Quest adventure, even you big kids (cough, adults, cough) are gonna love this one.
Footie fanatics won’t want to miss out on Manchester’s National Football Museum (unless you’re not a Man U or City supporter...) Anyhoo, the museum not only shares the history of the game, but you also get the opportunity to practice your best trophy-lift celebration.
And if that wasn’t enough, you can test your penalty-taking skills, goalkeeper reaction times and tiki-taka ability. They have plenty of events on too, so why not head down and celebrate England’s Euros victory?
Most kids (big and small) love LEGO®, and we bet you do too- besides how painful they are to step on, you can’t really fault them for much. Coined as the ‘ultimate LEGO® indoor playground’, you’re guaranteed to love LEGO® Discovery Centre Manchester.
You can explore Miniland, enjoy their 4D adventure, become a ninja and much much more. This is a perfect day out for those miserable, rainy days.
Everyone knows (and a lot of people, love) Harry Potter and all things ‘Expelliarmus’. If you’re one of those people (or are the legal guardian of one of those people), get yourself down to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour. You’ll see all the juicy behind the scenes goodness you can dream of, with features from all eight films.
Take a stroll down Diagon Alley, step onto Platform 9 ¾ and delve deep into Gringotts – can't say you do that every day.
Located in the beautiful heart of Edinburgh, Camera Obscura and World of Illusions is a fantastic rainy-day option, all the fam will be happy with this one. The attraction extends over six-storeys (phwoar), absolutely packed with hands-on exciting activities.
Nothing is as it seems at the Camera Obscura, illusions are everywhere you look – even if this ain’t your typical thing, it’s worth a visit for the killer views of Edinburgh from the rooftop.
At Days Out, you can book the UK’s best attractions (y’know the proper FOMO inducing ones?) -- we know where’s perfect for you. Find your next adventure.
