This cool East England county is wedged between Northamptonshire, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire. And its hotspots like Barton-le-Clay, Dunstable Downs and Pegsdon Hills sound as chilled as a pint of cider in a sunny beer garden.

But for something (a lot) livelier, check out Bodyflight adventure centre in Bedford – there’s indoor skydiving, surfing, climbing, racing and BASE jumping. Whew.
And don’t forget Whipsnade Zoo. Roaming red-necked wallabies, Chinese Water Deer, Amur tigers – they’ve got the lot.
Bedfordshire locals are called ‘Clangers’. But not after the cute, knitted Kids’ TV aliens – a clanger here is a pastry stuffed with things like beer-cooked beef. Nom nom.
