Days out in Bedfordshire

This cool East England county is wedged between Northamptonshire, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire. And its hotspots like Barton-le-Clay, Dunstable Downs and Pegsdon Hills sound as chilled as a pint of cider in a sunny beer garden.

Another cool highlight is the Saxon Village of Chicksands Priory – it’s got historic buildings like the priory church and old vicarage. You can treat yourself to a luxury weekend in the (Grade 1 listed) Luton Hoo Hotel, where Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh spent their honeymoon. Very posh. But for something (a lot) livelier, check out Bodyflight adventure centre in Bedford – there’s indoor skydiving, surfing, climbing, racing and BASE jumping. Whew.

And don’t forget Whipsnade Zoo. Roaming red-necked wallabies, Chinese Water Deer, Amur tigers – they’ve got the lot.

Bedfordshire locals are called ‘Clangers’. But not after the cute, knitted Kids’ TV aliens – a clanger here is a pastry stuffed with things like beer-cooked beef. Nom nom.
