Don't fancy trekking out for a day out? Perfect. We reckon you should try touring your own city. Wondering why?
So, let's get stuck in.
We’re sure you know the basic history of where you live, but do you understand the ins and outs of why your town was founded?
There are loads of historic tours scattered across the UK, but if you feel like exploring more than pub quiz history facts, you can amp up the realism at interactive experiences like the Edinburgh Dungeon (they also have locations in York, London and Blackpool too). These dungeons add a bit of gore and pizzazz to your typical history lesson.
If you feel like extending the tour of your own city, book a hotel room and make it a two-day event.
This way, you'll be able to get waaay more done and see loads of local attractions.
Live somewhere rural? Camp out and make the most of nature.
Make the most of the outdoors by bringing a picnic - yes, even in winter. Check out our winter picnic tips, tricks and recipes - they won't disappoint.
Ever thought, ‘Wow, that looks cool. I’ll go there one day.’? Well, think of this as the perfect opportunity to hit all of those spots - no excuses this time.
And if you're planning things in advance, you can collect a big ol' list of the bucket list spots you fancy going to.
We're a big fan of bucket lists at Days Out, why not check out our 2023 bucket list like no other?
You’ll feel a lot more like a tourist if you think and act like one too – try checking out local bloggers/influencers and reading up on local news and events while planning your day out.
Or if you want to go the full monty, grab some (empty) bags and wait around at the train station for a bit before you head out - fair warning, you may look a bit silly.
Depending on the time of year, a sunrise start could be at 8:30am or 4am... So it’s really up to you if you fancy an early rise (rewarded with some spectacular views), but if you’re more of a night owl, try a sunset view instead.
Our fav places for sunrises and sunsets tend to be beaches, but we're always up to try a new spot.
Speaking of views, we’re firm believers that every town has a good view spot. So, make it your mission to find your town’s best view point. Looking for inspiration? Here are our favourite Instagrammable views.
Don't forget to think outside of the box - we're talking seaside views, hilly landscapes and the tallest buildings you can find.
Feeling stuck on what to do? Guidebooks are literally made for that. They have the inside scoop on everything you should be doing in your chosen city. From food to activites, there will be loads to explore.
And there's probably no town to small to find - for example, maybe buy a guide book for North Wales if you're looking for some ideas for what to do in Conwy.
If you usually drive about, give walking a go – seeing your town from a different perspective can really mix things up. Or if you still want to travel far (while being eco-friendly), try getting the bus, train or tram wherever you go.
We're all about using public transport, and we've shared our knowledge too. Looking for days out from London by train? Sorted. Fancy taking a day trip by coach? Bingo. We love thinking of new ways to travel.
Do some research into local bloggers or celebs and have a look at what they’d recommend you do to explore.
Don't feel the need to stick to one itenary though, mix things up and visit spots from loads of different guides.
Don’t trust someone else’s judgement? We get it. So, why not write your own itenary? (It’s a great go-to for when friends and family visit your city for the first time).
Whether they're touristy spots or just somewhere you've seen loads of people go to, either will do the job.
Don't forget to rate each of the options you tried afterwards - that way you'll know which to give a miss on your next local touristy day.
